Does the PhD programme offer any financial support?

The Central Government of India is in charge of the Fellowship program known as the Prime Minister Fellowship for Doctoral Research. It was established to give deserving students seeking PhDs financial assistance.  A Subcommittee of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade & Industry has acknowledged public-private partnerships (PPP) for human resource capacity building for industrial R&D as one of the key deliverables. Designing, developing, and implementing a doctoral research scheme under PPP for boosting trust levels in academia, research organizations, and industry is one of the important ideas that arose from the private sector.

A unique program for 100 "Doctoral Research Fellowships" per year was unveiled during the Indian Science Congress Association's inaugural ceremony in Kolkata in June 2012. Vide According to the Prime Minister's Office ID No. 3646245/2012-ES-II dated 2 November 2012, the request to rename the "SERB-CII Doctoral Fellowship Scheme" as the "Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research" was accepted. At the 'AICTE-CII University- Industry Congress & 4th Global Higher Education Summit' held in New Delhi later, the Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research was publicly introduced.Master's students are generally not eligible for financial aid from the Institute, although they are qualified for teaching and research assistantships that are assigned by their department.

Master's students should consult the details on paying for graduate school. This program aims to inspire young, gifted, motivated, and result-driven academics to pursue research that is pertinent to industry. Under this plan, full-time PhD academics receive twice as much money as they normally would for conducting research. Including home rent allowance (HRA), the average government fellowship in India is about Rs 25,000 per month at any academic or research institution. The Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research offers academics a stipend worth twice as much as a JRF or SRF, or around Rs 86,000 per month. The government provides half of this scholarship, while the other half is provided by a partner business that collaborates closely with the candidate on the research project.

Since 2012, more than 300 PM Fellows have received fellowships, thanks to the collaboration of more than 100 institutes and 200 businesses. It is anticipated that this program would ultimately entice a sizable number of gifted students to pursue PhDs and will alter the industry's mindset towards investing in R&D and hiring more PhDs.

Types of Financial Support

A student's financial aid package may include a variety of sources of assistance, such as:

Scholarships that pay for tuition and fees in full or in part.

• Fellowship stipends: do not need work. Endowed fellowships are also provided by several departments. These fellowships are often chosen by a faculty committee within the department.

• Appointments for training programs: For US citizens and permanent residents taking part in training programs supported by the federal government.

• Research assistantships: These positions are open to graduate students who have the skills and credentials to support certain faculty staff members in particular departments.

• Graduate assistantships: These positions are available for full-time PhD and master's students who combine teaching and sporadic research tasks, often under the close supervision of their designated advisor.

Tuition and Fees

Each semester, tuition and fees are due from all enrolled full-time students. Students who are supported by assistantships or fellowships will also get a tuition credit. Please refer to the Estimated Budget for the most recent rates of tuition and fees.

Please get in touch with the Graduate Studies Office if you have any more inquiries or need assistance with financial aid.

The Office of Financial Aid should be contacted with any questions you may have about loans.

Guaranteed Funding

For at least the majority of the time they are registered and pursuing their degree, Ph.D. students are supported financially thanks to a competitive package offered by the Graduate School. This assistance consists of four basic parts: a stipend, tuition assistance, fee assistance, and health insurance premium assistance.

In general, The Graduate School provides Ph.D. students with six years of complete coverage for health and dental insurance premiums in addition to five years of stipend, tuition, and fee assistance.

The additional financial aid that departments with Ph.D. programs offer differs from that included in the funding guarantee. To acquire a clear idea of the financial support they may anticipate from the department as they plan their budget for their stay in graduate school, prospective and existing students are strongly encouraged to speak with the director of graduate studies (DGS) for their program. To assist students in planning their money while attending graduate school, we have produced a chart that details who is responsible for what in each year. The Ph.D. financial support package is broken down into its individual parts below.

Full Financial Support

For the course of the doctorate program, all PhD candidates who make sufficient academic progress are given complete financial assistance.Support for Ph.D. students is provided by The Graduate School, the departments, and other financial sources such grants from the government or the commercial sector. Students are required to contribute by making a sincere attempt to get outside fellowships at some time over their funding period, and they should be motivated to do so. It is crucial to realize that the entire budget for graduate scholarships depends on a sizable proportion of students receiving such outside funding. Students gain from external grants and fellowships because they are prestigious, and applying for them offers chances to hone grant-writing abilities that may be useful.

Each PhD student must: Find a dissertation advisor who will oversee their PhD study; provide financing in the form of a research assistantship when they are not obtaining funds from another source; and satisfy the requirements for good academic advancement.

According on academic achievement, the PhD Program offers funds to qualified doctoral candidates and ensures four to five years of assistance. A teaching assistantship or scholarship as well as a full tuition and fee waiver are typically given to students who are making sufficient progress. When admissions choices are made, the PhD program makes announcements about the assistantship and scholarship awards. Additionally, PhD candidates are given a sizable research fund so they may present their findings at prestigious conferences.
