You may decide whether you want to focus on research or teaching throughout your time as a professor. It's possible that you're considering a career outside of academia, maybe in the private sector. After finishing your doctorate, you may find employment in a field related to your field of study.

At some time, every doctoral candidate wonders, "What should I do after I finish my degree?"
 

It's beneficial to start thinking about potential careers at a young age (Why? Obviously, you've read it. However, what choices do you have? What kinds of jobs are available, though?
Young researchers with a PhD are highly sought after in a variety of fields. In this article, I will introduce you to six potential fields of work for Dutch PhDs based on their research interests.  
One of the most common paths after completing a PhD is to work as a postdoc in an academic setting. This is a short-term (1-4 years) employment in a research institution, hospital affiliated with a university, or university.
 

Research in the same or a similar topic is common for postdoctoral scholars. You get more research experience by working in a different institution, lab, or location, or by trying out a new research strategy. The 'new' item you try is really nothing special. You will have more freedom and responsibility than you had while pursuing a doctorate. There should be more data, commentary, and anecdotes on the postdoc experience.
You may also enter the workforce as a researcher or scientific consultant in company after earning your doctorate degree. In order to innovate processes, create new products, and address real-world issues, many businesses in the industry have dedicated R&D departments. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, high tech, telecommunications, finance, and insurance all rank at the top in terms of research expenditures.
 

DOCTORAL STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR AT AN APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY

You may also pursue a career in applied sciences by joining a university known as "de hogeschool." Research at a hogeschool is more applied, leading to meaningful information and best practices that businesses may employ to develop.
A Lector directs the study group known as the Lectoraat. Typically, a career in academia begins as a lecturer, with opportunities for advancement to researcher. 
 

NONPROFIT RESEARCHER/ADVISOR

You may begin a career as a researcher or scientific consultant with one of the many Dutch non-profit independent research groups that are not affiliated with any Dutch government institution, university, or business. Some examples of such institutions include the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the Sanquin Blood Bank, the ECBO Expertise Centre for Vocational Education, and the HollandPTC Proton Therapy Centre.
Scientist, researcher, project manager, modeler, engineer, coordinator, and consultant are just a few of the many job titles that may be found in this field. When applying for jobs, don't limit yourself to one certain title. 
 

ENTREPRENEUR, START-UP

The last path I'll discuss with you today is going into business for yourself. Do you wish to commercialize the novel concept or product you're developing for your PhD? Then you should consider being self-employed.
