What is a good grade for PhD?

What is a good grade for PhD?
30 Sep

There are no strict requirements, although a 3.5 GPA is recommended for serious consideration at the best universities. Your chances of being accepted to a PhD program are little to none if you have a GPA below 3.0. This is because earning a PhD requires a significant time commitment.A Master's degree in a relevant field, often with an overall grade of at least 55% (or the equivalent), is required to pursue a PhD in India.

Candidates are also expected to speak the required languages for their respective programs. I was wondering whether it was standard practice in mathematics to include one's PhD dissertation grade on one's academic CV for purposes such as:

 • your personal website

• funding/grant applications

 • short research stay applications

 • postdoc applications

 • tenure track applications • etc.

Some schools are more dedicated to halting grade inflation than others, and there seems to be more criteria for determining final grades than there are schools. (The debate about the usefulness of grades at the doctoral level is one I'd rather not have.)

If only "good" grades should be shown, is there a standard threshold for this? The following are the levels used in the German system (rough explanations are provided in brackets):

A passing grade is indicated by the combination of the words summa (meaning "with distinction"), magna (meaning "very good"), cum (meaning "good"), and rite (meaning "pass").

A Master's degree in a relevant field, often with an overall grade of at least 55% (or the equivalent), is required to pursue a PhD in India. Candidates are also expected to speak the required languages for their respective programs. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a terminal academic degree that is well respected and recognized across the world. It's the pinnacle of academic achievement, and it's how people become called "Doctor" (albeit it's not the same as the medical degree). According to the OECD data, India produces over 24,000 new PhDs each year, putting it in fourth place worldwide. This book is for you if you're thinking of doing your doctoral studies in India.    In most schools, the most crucial thing is finding a professor who is willing to supervise your thesis rather than worrying about how well you did in class (though a master's or comparable degree is usually necessary). So, you need to persuade someone that you are worth working with on a research project; if your grades aren't great, it will be more challenging. While qualifications are necessary, his or her assistance will be more so. You may find a job on campus to help with expenses by going via your supervisor. There are often not many of them.

While grades do matter to some extent, they are not always the most decisive aspect in a PhD student's academic or professional success. In the classroom, students' performance and comprehension are evaluated using letter grades.

The Doctor of Philosophy (sometimes spelled "doctor of philosophy" or "PhD"; from the Latin "philosophiae doctor" or "doctor philosophiae") is the terminal degree most often granted by universities when a student has completed an extensive program of study and research. Doctoral degrees may be earned in a wide variety of disciplines.
